A new operator since 1 January 2026

From 00:00 on 1 January 2026 the airport has been run by the Phu Quoc branch of Mat Troi Airport Joint Stock Company (SAC). Three documents allowed the handover: airport business licence 27/GPKDCHK-BXD from the Ministry of Construction (25 December 2025), airport operating certificate 6645/GCNKT-CHK from the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam (25 December 2025), and Decision 12045/QD-QLXNC of the Immigration Department approving the airport's aviation security programme (22 December 2025).

The handover report lists no change in procedures for passengers; it describes the aim of raising service to an international five-star standard.

The airport itself opened at 00:00 on 2 December 2012 in what was then Duong To commune, about 7 km south of Duong Dong, replacing the old town airport the same night. In January 2026 the culture and tourism ministry reported that the existing terminal, designed for 4 million passengers a year, had been over capacity since 2024. Traffic records followed: 47 international arrivals on 17 January 2026, and 86 arriving flights, 50 of them international, on 14 February 2026.

The investment was approved by the aviation authority on 20 June 2025, at that time for a capacity of 20 million passengers a year and completion before the second quarter of 2027. None of the reports we read up to 1 October 2026 said whether the second runway had met its 3 September target, so we list it as unconfirmed.

Where the sources disagree

Capacity. VietnamPlus on 8 August 2026 gave 24 million passengers a year for the first phase of T2. Tien Phong in May 2026 and the aviation authority's 2025 approval gave 20 million. VietnamPlus on 1 October 2026 gave "about 20–24 million a year by 2030". All agree on 50 million a year when every phase is finished.

Deadline. The draft resolution on special mechanisms, reported by Dai bieu Nhan dan on 3 August 2026, listed the airport for March 2027. VietnamPlus, in August and October, gave April 2027. We print both until the airport or the aviation authority announces an opening date.

Start of works. VietnamPlus on 8 August 2026 and Tien Phong in May 2026 said the expansion started in July 2025; VietnamPlus on 1 October 2026 said September 2025.

APEC 2027 and the works around it

Vietnam hosts APEC in 2027, and the Leaders' Week is expected to take place in the Phu Quoc special zone, An Giang province, according to Dai bieu Nhan dan on 2 October 2026. No dates had been published when we checked. On 24 August 2026 the National Assembly passed a resolution on special mechanisms to unblock projects serving the summit; Bao Chinh phu reported 464 of 476 deputies in favour, and the resolution took effect on 1 September 2026.

Besides the airport, the main works are an APEC convention centre on reclaimed land at Bai Dat Do, in the south-west near An Thoi (started June 2025, VND 21,860 billion, more than 16 ha, main hall 10,790 m²); road DT975, about 18 km, being widened to ten lanes and due in the first quarter of 2027; and a light-rail line of about 18 km with six stations, started in late 2025. In May 2026 site clearance at Nui Ong Quan and Bai Dat Do was being speeded up, with work running in three shifts. A port terminal once planned at Mui Dat Do was dropped from port planning because the land went to APEC facilities.

What the works mean for a trip now

We found no official notice of changes to check-in, terminals or road access for passengers as of 12 October 2026. What the reports do show is a crowded terminal at peaks and a large building site to the south. Allow extra time at the airport in the dry-season peak around Tet and in national holidays; on 2 September 2026, for example, around 570 flights were expected over the holiday and 148 on the busiest day. If you are heading south towards An Thoi, Bai Dat Do or the old prison site, expect construction traffic on the road being widened.

For the summit itself, no access or traffic rules have been announced. Measures for an event of this size are normally announced by local authorities shortly before it; we will log them with their dates when they appear.

When this page is not what you need

This page follows the building programme and the summit timeline. It does not track daily flight operations. For a delayed or retimed flight, lost baggage or check-in times, the airline is the source; for terminal services on the day, the airport's own notices are. If you are planning a stay around the summit, wait for official dates before booking anything you cannot change.

What to check before you go

  • Your airline's check-in times and any notice about the terminal used, especially from early 2027.
  • Whether the summit dates have been announced, if you plan to travel in 2027.
  • Extra time for the drive between the airport and the south of the island while DT975 is widened.
  • Our flights page for routes that started or were announced since 2025.
